Goodbye, Dumi! Hello, Healthy!

In provinces like Masbate, North Cotabato, Capiz, and Cebu, CHSI and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNCEF) implemented a six-month communication campaign to encourage fathers and mothers to build their own sanitary toilets. Designed as a strategic social and behavior change initiative, “Goodbye, Dumi! Hello, Healthy!” helped local sanitation and health workers to bring affordable sanitary toilet options to those practicing open defecation. The campaign included a community musical play about the romance between a housefly and a stump of poop, a local radio program, communication training of daycare workers, health workers, and sanitation officers, and a Countdown to Zero Open Defecation event.

After the campaign, access to sanitary toilets improved on average from 35% to 95% in the project barangays.

In 2016, the campaign won several awards from the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), and the Stevies Asia Pacific Region. In 2019, the Department of Health (DOH) made the campaign the official health promotion initiative of the Philippine Approach to Sustainable Sanitation (PhATSS).
